Gather, Grounding, and Thank You & Goodbye

GATHER, GROUNDING, AND THANK YOU & GOODBYE, 2024
Coated Steel & Reflective Vinyl

Gather, Grounding, and Thank You & Goodbye are three interconnected artworks which express welcome, belonging, and gratitude. ‘Gather’, the three-panel entry door on Boren is inspired by twined gathering baskets. When the panels activate to open the door, regional foods, and traditional materials flow into the basket. As a delivery entrance where people come to bring supplies, this gesture of gathering mirrors their activities, while also referencing the overall purpose of the Seattle Convention Center. Upon entering, ‘Grounding’ is a series of massively scaled reflective root systems which metaphorically connect the land and place to the conceptual work taking place in the center. It is comprised of a variety of types of root systems that incorporate indigenous plants and plants brought by immigrant cultures. It is also scattered with human-made root systems like rebar and wiring.  When vehicles exit on Terry, the final door is marked with a set of four mirrored hands. As the door opens, the hands come together in symbolic applause, adding a final gesture of ‘Thank you & Goodbye’. Together the images reference the use of the space while fostering a sense of community ownership and open-handed welcome.
